PANCREATIC CANCER

The pancreas consists of two separate glands: exocrine and endocrine. Exocrine release pancreatic juice into ducts used to break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates, and its cells make up 95% of the pancreas. Endocrine cells are arranged in small clusters, known as islets, which release insulin and glucagons into the blood. The exocrine cells and endocrine cells of the pancreas form completely different types of tumors.

Most tumors produced by exocrine cells are cancerous and about 95% of all exocrine pancreatic cancers are adenocarcinomas. Less common exocrine pancreatic cancers are adenosquamous carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and giant cell carcinomas. Tumors produced by endocrine cells are less common and are mostly benign.

Treatment of pancreatic cancer can include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy but in most cases, it is used to further extend survival and rarely produces a cure. Unfortunately, early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is rare because cancer patients usually don't start showing symptoms until the later stages. The one-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 21% and for five-year survival it is 5%.

Individuals with terminal pancreatic cancer receive end-of-life. End-of-life care includes seeing a barrage of doctors, nurses and therapists. Terminally ill cancer patients can be treated in their homes or in the care of a hospital. The financial cost for end-of-life care is expensive and most insurance companies do not cover all treatments.
